Based on the Natural Approach to language acquisition, these songs give students the opportunity for independent learning while enjoying famous English songs. However, if the vocabulary or cultural references are at a level too far above student ability, students will definitely appreciate a short explanation.
My basic method is to use the Cloze texts in the song lists to focus simply on listening skills. In my classes, students fill in the missing lyrics on the Lyrics Worksheet and I am experimenting using a digital version with the school intranet.
These songs include wonderful natural sounding English. Have students sing them to improve their pronunciation. The children's songs are fun. Please don't take the interest out by having students study them too intensively. They are for the child in all of us.
